She is the youngest of the family’s four siblings. After living for long in Kalamazoo, her parents moved them to a small town in Benzonia, in 1968. It is in this country setting that she was able to live close with animals and love them.

Born in Ohio as the youngest kid in the family, meant that she was the closest to their parents. GM transferred her dad to Kalamazoo, and she went to school there. It was during this time that his brother had just died at the Vietnam War as a soldier. This death pushed her parents to move to a small motel in Benzonia which they bought. Her love for animals was inspired by the fact that she lived so close to them in this countryside.
Dr. Dee was a pro in school. She held the highest scores at Benzie Central High School, in her SAT and ACT. This gave her a full scholarship for her full undergraduate college course. She proceeded to the Michigan State University of Veterinary Medicine where she earned a doctorate, Cum Laude, in 1981.
After graduating, she left her home and moved to Alaska to begin her career. Her first clinic was a second floor located above a Kobuk Fuel and Feed. Dr. Dee Thornell is now the proud owner of the largest animal hospital in Alaska called, Animal House. It is the most advanced vet hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska.
It is this hospital that Dr. Dee and her team of vets works on owls, dogs, cats, eagles, beavers, iguanas, chinchillas, moose and many other animals. It is an up-to-date animal hospital equipped to the tooth. It has a Montessori dog training school, a laundry, a crematorium, and a retail store.
