Jesse Watters Controversies
Chinatown segment
Jesse Watters got a backlash for his segment of “Watters’ World” when he was touted as a racist towards Asian Americans.
Jesse ran an episode where he was in New York City’s Chinatown and was captured asking Chinese Americans if they knew karate and whether he should bow when greeting them, or if their watches were ever stolen.
During the show, the famous “Kung Fu Fighting”, 1974 song, was playing in the background. The interviews were spaced by references to martial arts and parts where Watters is receiving a foot massage and playing with nunchucks.
The backlash started with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who condemned Watters’ segment as “vile, racist behavior” that “has no place in our city”. Many other lawmakers and journalists condemned him. The Asian American Journalists Association made a statement saying:
“We should be far beyond tired, racist stereotypes and targeting an ethnic group for humiliation and objectification on the basis of their race.”
He later apologized by tweeting,
“My man-on-the-street interviews are meant to be taken as tongue-in-cheek and I regret if anyone found offense. … As a political humorist, the Chinatown segment was intended to be a light piece, as all Watters World segments are.”
Ivanka Trump comments
Another turn of rubbing his audience the wrong way was just two days after joining, The Five, as a co-host. He made a comment about Ivanka Trump that didn’t go down well with part of his audience. After seeing footage of Ivanka speaking in a panel about female entrepreneurship, Watters commented:
“So I don’t really get what’s going on here, but I really liked how she was speaking into that microphone.”
The audience interpreted him as imitating the stimulation of oral sex with his hand gesture as he says this. The audiences, especially the female ones, were irate about his sexist action. They tweeted with very angry comments, which forced him to respond.
He commented and said:
“During the break, we were commenting on Ivanka’s voice and how it was low and steady and resonates like a smooth jazz radio DJ…This was in no way a joke about anything else.”
