Zeb Shelton Hogan was born on October 12, 1973. He grew up in Tempe, Arizona and Davis, California with brotheres Zachary Hogan and Dale Hogan. As a child, he frequented zoos and aquariums with his family. He became increasingly fascinated with animal shows such as Wild, Wild World of Animals.
He went on to graduate from the University of Arizona with a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology. He enrolled in the Environmental Risk Assessment Program at Chiang Mai University in Thailand and later did his Ph.D. in ecology at the University of California, Davis.

In 2016, he was a fellow at the University of Wisconsin. He has also worked as a research biologist at the University of Nevada, Reno.
