Ray started his career as a modified racer. At the age of 26, he was hired by the International Race of Champions (IROC) as a chassis specialist. During late 1991, he began working for NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki. After departing with Alan, he joined Jeff Gordon, with whom he had briefly worked in 1990.

Evernham and Gordon made the best team. From the first day they worked together, they did really good. Together, they were a dominant team in NASCAR Cup competition and have won 47 Cup races and 3 Cup championships.
He founded Evernham Motorsports in 2000. The team was renamed as Gillett Evernham Motorsports in 2007 and finally as Richard Petty Motorsports in 2009. He dropped his ownership in 2010. He currently serves as a consultant for Hendrick Companies.
Besides being a consultant, Ray is famous for his car collection. He has about a dozen of historic cars, including Jeff Gordon’s Diet Pepsi midget car, a #24 Jeff Gordon car called the V-Max car and modifieds raced by Donnie Allison and Richie Evans. He also has a couple of modifieds from his own racing career, including the #9 car which he crashed in 1991, ultimately ending his racing career.
Ray Evernham has two children from different wives
Evernham and his current wife, Erin Crocker, whom he wedded on August 26, 2009, gave birth to a baby daughter on July 25, 2015. The baby is the second child for Ray and the first for his professional race car driver wife.
