Rachel was born on December 6, 1987, in England. She turned 30 years old this past December. She has two elder brothers Daniel Simon “Dan” Atherton, 36, and George David “Gee” Atherton, 32. Both of her brothers are also a professional racing cyclist.
Atherton began riding BMX when she was eight years old. Gradually, she learned mountain biking during her preteens. She has had excellent records since the beginning of her career. She was identified as Sunday Times’ Sportswoman of the Year and as BBC Midlands Junior Sportswoman of the Year in 2005. Three years later, she became the BBC Midlands Sportswoman of the Year.
