He was born on 11th, September 1977 in Islington England. He stayed in Islington until the age of four years when his family moved from Islington. At the age of 11, Jonny started playing the guitar encouraged by his brother Tim.

He attended University college of London where he majored in Astronomy and Mathematics. It was during his college life that Jonny met his fellow band members: Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, and Will champion. Their future manager Phil Harvey also met them at the University College of London.
In addition, Buckland is also a soccer fan supporting Tottenham Hot Spur. It was until his trip to Japan that Jonny decided to move from being a vegetarian. It was the language barrier in Japan that denied him the access to his vegetarian diet.
